12/22/08 by Kira from Texas Rating: 3 They look stunning, but they SPOIL you.
Unfortunately, after switching back to Blochs, my feet were discernibly weaker, and I think it was the shoes. They do seem to "prop and spring" you up onto pointe, and your feet work considerably less.
12/15/08 by Hope from Vancouver, WA Awesome but have two major flaws....
Rating: 4 When I was wearing my first pair of pointe shoes, I would frequently ride home from pointe crying from the pain. The moment I tried these on, the pain stopped. Now, I can go for almost 2.5 hours in rehearsal with almost no pain! The only complaints I have are that the hard shank is not very hard at all. So if you have those gorgeous, difficult arches like mine, these shoes will be a challenge to dance in unless you use vamp elastic :). Also, the seams along the back heel often needs to be re-sewn. Other than that, these are amazing shoes.
12/12/08 by Live, Love, Dance :) Pain!
Rating: 2 These shoes may make my feet look really good, but it's not worth all the pain!!! After my first few classes en pointe, my big toenail started bruising and it has gotten WORSE! Now, I have bruises on the BOTH big toenails! It's very frustrating, since Nutcracker is opening in less than a week, and I can't even do a three minute dance without walking away in pain!
12/11/08 by Marisa from Miami Ahhhmazing!
Rating: 5 I absolutely love these shoes! I've had the same pair for two years! When they start getting dirty I just throw them in the washing machine! THESE LAST FOREVER! When the shank starts getting worn down I just blow dry the shank and they stiffen up like new!
11/25/08 by Newpointshoes from Georgia Rating: 5 The second these shoes arrived I ripped open the box and tried them on. I must tell you, my feet haven't felt so good in a LONG time. I ordered the supple shank and was very pleased with them. The high vamp provided me with plenty of support (I need a high vamp because of feet issues) the shank flattered my arch when I pointed and quickly molded to my feet so they look even better than the first time I wore them. But you must be careful! I often switch back to my capezios so my feet can keep on becoming strong. Also, the fabric on the inside is so soft that the heel of the shoe would slip off when I wore tights underneath. I quickly fixed the problem with a pair of heel grippers. You can buy them online or make your own. Finally, many big-name companies don't let you wear Gaynors in their school if you go there over the summer because although the shoes look great and make almost no sound, they do not train your feet as well as any other shoes. Still, they are my show and rehearsal shoes and I (and several of my friends) are completely head over heals for them.
11/25/08 by Kate from Connecticut GREAT!!!
Rating: 5 I have not actually worn them in a class but I tried them on in my dance shop and they made my feet look amazing and that's hard for me. I recommend them for someone whose been dancing for a couple of years b/c your ankles need to be strong because they are very easy to get up on. But they make pretty much any foot look good and I can't wait to buy them! <3
11/24/08 by Ile from San Juan, PR Rating: 5 These shoes are the best pointe shoes EVER! I've been known to have a weak left ankle, and, although it has somewhat affected my dancing, these shoes take care of the rest. At first I had some Veronese shoes, but I switched to Gaynor Minden and would never dream of going back. They are so easy to dance in, and very adaptable to my feet. I wouldn't trade them for anything.
11/18/08 by dancer.757 from Hampton, VA Rating: 5 I would say that these shoes are the most comfortable and supportive shoe there is. They are also very 'quiet' which is a good thing; especially when running on releve. I've gone through about three pairs in five years; of course I don't do pointe work that much. I would suggest getting fitted for them at your local dancewear shop and usually a half size to one size larger is best. For myself; I go one to one-and-a half size larger because I have wide feet and I wear semi-thick gel pads in them. I have tried to wear them without "ouch"! It hurts so bad! But some people can dance that way. I think dancers who are lightweight (under 130) can handle that kind of pressure of no pads; but for me; I am over 140 and technically I feel too heavy for pointe work but I love to dance in them anyway, painful or not. At least these shoes support my weight better than ordinary shoes which are a no-no for me. The price is more if you buy them directly from a dancewear shop that carries the Gaynor Minden shoe. I highly recommend this to all types of dancers of different levels. Be careful not to cut the side drawstrings too short; you may lose them like I just recently did to my brand new ones. I ruined them and now they gap terribly on my feet.
10/31/08 by Laura Best pointe shoes I have ever had!
Rating: 5 I absolutely love these pointe shoes. I have had mine for almost three years and they are still working for me. Even though they are no longer pink (in fact they are almost black), the fabric is coming apart (because I have worn them so much), and you can see the box (which is blue) I still love these shoes and I wouldn't think about changing them (even though mom fusses at me because they aren't as pretty as a new pair would be)...
10/09/08 by Laura from Michigan Love these shoes!
Rating: 5 These are the most comfortable shoes I have ever danced in! I love how supportive and cushioned they are! I also love that they're naturally curved so they feel as custom fit to your foot as a pointe shoe can get. I also love that the box is lower than most shoes. I don't like it when it feels like half of your foot is in the box. They also make my arch look fantastic! I absolutely love these shoes! However, I did completely destroy these in a little over a week. I danced in them every day for several hours, so, no one else should be able to destroy them that fast. I assume if I danced in any other shoe like that, they wouldn't last nearly that long! I am definitely buying these again! However, if you're first learning, I wouldn't buy them. I call these "cheater shoes" because they make it easy to go up. I'd get these as a performance shoe, but have others for class. By the way, I also love the ExtraFlex shank!
09/26/08 by Sammy from New York Rating: 2 I had these shoes and at first I loved them, but one day I wore them without tights and I got six blisters on my feet! Also, they gave me little ankle support and I got corns in between my feet. These shoes work for some people, but everyone I know that had them had to switch to another shoe!
08/30/08 by Annie from California Best pointe shoes EVER!
Rating: 5 I love these pointe shoes! They have really made a difference in my dancing. I used to have Grishko 2007s and I hated pointe. Now I really like it because these shoes are so soft and flexible. I've had them for about 3 or 4 months now. I would definitely recommend these shoes!
08/21/08 by PDD from New York Rating: 3 I've been dancing for a long time. I got tired of shoes dying on me so fast so I tried these ones for now 5 years. Please pay attention to this. YES, they are like tennis shoes for ballerinas not to mention they last forever. If you are already a pro then they are OK but they "will not" make your feet stronger. They don't do the work for you. No shoe does but these shoes are just comfortable. They totally kill your big toes but again, do not get used to them. They should not be DOCTOR recommended "I don't get that" so if you wear them, try to go back as often as possible to the other regular shoes because like I said, they will not help your feet get stronger.
08/06/08 by Dani from California Rating: 5 These are the best pointe shoes ever! I'm saying this because my first pair hurt my feet like crazy but these feel like my shoes are pillows. The only thing that I do not like is their price.
07/29/08 by Natalie from Long Island Rating: 5 Gaynor Mindens are great shoes if you can't afford custom shoes and can't find shoes that are truly suited to your foot type. I decided to consider Gaynors after trying to find a shoe that really fit great and thanks to the choices you have with these shoes, I've finally found the shoe that works for me - narrow width, #2 box, sleek heel. I have never found a comparable pointe shoe. It's great Gaynor Minden has so many options.
I also think the colour is perfect and that they really do last long; they're a very well made shoe. The several shank options are convenient too. You DEFINITELY need to be fitted for these - the fitters at the New York boutique are sooo helpful and nice if you can get there, and you can call them as well for extra assistance.
07/28/08 by Avery from Austin, TX Great!
Rating: 5 I love these shoes! They are really beautiful and show off your arches nicely. The many choices in fitting these shoes is really nice but you must be careful to get the right fit. Since Gaynor's don't break down as easily as other shoes or change due to longer wear, it's especially important to get a perfect fit. I wear a super soft in Grishko's but I got the hard shank in the Gaynor's and love it! Although the shoes are very well padded, I have found you still need to tape your toes because I got lots of blisters. Overall these are great shoes! I have gotten tons of compliments on them and now a ton of the girls in my company are wearing them.
07/28/08 by Mari Rating: 4 Overall, I have liked these shoes pretty well. But because there is so much built in padding in the shoe, I would recommend a thinner toe pad. The support is excellent, and although they help a great deal, I wouldn't say that they do all of the work for you. They look great on most dancers feet, which I like a lot because I have a very sloped arch. So if you are considering these shoes, I can guarantee that you won't regret it.
07/24/08 by Olive Mae from New York, NY Marvelous shoe... but be careful!
Rating: 5 A few words on fitting: I would suggest one half size longer rather than a whole. Also if you are a C width in Bloch, the medium width is perfect. Most students need the ExtraFlex shank, but if you have flatter, stronger feet, Supple is better. Unfortunately, Discount Dance Supply does not stock Feather, or Pianissimo shanks, which are even softer than Supple.
Now, about this "cheater shoe" business: The box is extremely supportive, maybe even too supportive. If you let them, they WILL do the work for you. Your feet MAY become weaker as a result, but only if the wearer is LAZY. It is the DANCER who controls their own feet. If you are really worried, I would advise keeping a pair of traditionally made shoes and wearing them once a week to maintain your strength. 'Nough said.
I barely needed any padding around my toes while wearing these, yet I could still feel the floor very well. They are also flattering for low arches. Though you still need to point your feet as hard as in any other shoes, your efforts will be rewarded (UNLIKE many other shoes).
All in all, this is an incredible, innovative shoe. But be careful!
07/20/08 by Colleen The Ballerina from Princeton, NJ Best Pointe Shoe Made!
Rating: 5 I have tried every brand/ style of pointe shoe out there. I have also suffered many injuries due to former pointe shoes I have worn. The older paste style shoes just wouldn't hold up for me, they would get soft too fast, especially wearing them for hours upon hours in the studio during the summer. I ended up with black toe nails, which eventually fell off and grew ingrown, requiring surgery. Also, I have a high arch and have actually broken the older style shanks, resulting in tendonitis. With Gaynor Minden's, all my problems have been solved and my technique has greatly improved - not having too worry about your shoes during a performance is priceless. You can focus on your artistry and technique! Thank you Eliza!
07/11/08 by Lolo T from Petersburg, AL Rating: 5 I love Gaynor Mindens! I have a really high arch and these shoes are perfect for that. I recommend these to anyone who need something for your arch. I like that it already has padding in it. I may be young but I'm going to stick with Gaynors!
07/03/08 by Lindsey from Arizona Perfect for beginners!
Rating: 5 Gaynor Mindens are the best pointe shoes EVER! I recommend to have your shoes fitted by a professional. The only bad thing that I didn't like was the box of the pointe shoe. I had to keep taping my toes so I wouldn't get any blisters. I can't wait to buy these shoes again!
07/02/08 by Roxanne Very good shoes.
Rating: 5 Gaynor Mindens are wonderful shoes, and dancers at any level can wear them. I've been doing pointe for about 5 years now, and have tried Blochs, Grishkos, and Capezios. What I love about Gaynors is that you get them already arched to your feet, in the shank strength you choose. Therefore, there is no "break in" time; they mold perfectly to your feet from day one. With traditionally made shoes, you have to break them in before you can dance your best- and before you know it, they're dead. I prefer
Gaynor Mindens because they give consistent results and don't distract you as you're dancing. They don't restrain your feet from working, so they're unlike the "resistant" traditional shoes. Think about it, resistance is just your feet, fighting against your shoes. Gaynor mindens work WITH you!
06/26/08 by Kelly Amazing!!!
Rating: 5 They make my feet look perfect!!! I have horrible feet. My teacher told me the day I put them on, "ooh you have been working really hard on your feet!" And I thought to myself nope, it's just the shoes!
06/15/08 by Addy Rating: 5 These are the best shoes I have ever worn!!!
06/04/08 by Mars -Bars from New Hampshire GM Rock
Rating: 5 I would definitely have to disagree with ALL of you who think that GM should not be a beginner shoe. I'm going on my second year "en pointe" and these shoes are incredible. I could wear them all day. So comfy. They're very light and rolling through demi pointe is a breeze. They break-in very easy and still are good forever. Going on my second year in the same shoe. They still have A LONG time left. There's one girl in my pointe class who has had the same pair of pointe shoes for 3 years and she is still going with them. They definitely save lots of money and are INCREDIBLE for beginners :)
06/01/08 by Kayla H. from Orange, NJ Flippin' awesome
Rating: 5 Gaynor Minden pointe shoes are the best! The pro's say that you can't go on 3/4 pointe, but you can. I love the way the shoe supports your arches. They are good for any kind of arch;some people don't even have to wear pads! They're great!
05/20/08 by Ballet lover from Southern CA Great!
Rating: 5 These are great shoes! They are very comfy, and I never really had to have pads. But I have a high arch, and they didn't look that flattering on my feet. If you have a small arch they look better. Wonderful, and last FOREVER!
05/03/08 by Michelle from OK Rating: 5 I strongly recommend Gm's!!! They are very supportive and absolutely NOT a cheat shoe! I have read some of the other reviews and I think most people didn't get the right shank or vamp size. No pointe shoe is going to "magically" make you stay up en pointe!!! I recently decided to try a pair of traditional pointe shoes and right away, I got a sprained tendon in my foot. Granted, I was annoyed because they felt like they were working against my feet. Wearing traditional pointe shoes just isn't worth getting injuries.
04/25/08 by Alaskan Dancer from Fairbanks AK Rating: 5 My whole dance studio uses Gaynor Minden, except me. I can't use them because I have really long feet, but I wish I could. These are great shoes on any level, because they form to your feet easily.
04/18/08 by Jen Love them!!!
Rating: 5 I just got these and LOVE them! They are so comfortable and well made. They have a cushion at the heel and felt-like padding in the box. My last pair were Bloch Sonatas and I could never get over in them but with GMs I can!
I also wanted to mention that the reviewers who said these don't work your feet might have used the Hard or Extra Flex shanks. If you get the Supple or FeatherFlex, they will definitely work your feet. If you are having any problems with pointe, give these a try!
04/17/08 by Alyssa from SLC, Utah Love Them!!!
Rating: 5 I have always had Gaynors and Love them! I was in the Nutcracker this last Christmas and they were great for long practices! I love these!!!
04/08/08 by Dancingfeetandhands2000 from St. Louis MO Rating: 5 This is a wonderful shoe for beginner and advanced pointe work. Not only does it last twice as long, I have never had a blister or sore spot. This is the only pointe shoe I have ever owned. I have watched the other girls in my class suffer while I have enjoyed my work without any pain at all. Next year I will be starting my grade 4 pointe work and would not have any other shoe. Thank You Gaynor Minden for making such a wonderful shoe.
04/05/08 by Lolo from Alaska Rating: 5 I love Gaynor Mindens. For people who have really high arches, like me, they are so nice because they bend into every curve of your foot.
03/30/08 by Kate from California NOT a cheater shoe
Rating: 5 These are great--if your feet are right for this shoe, buy them! People say it does the work for you, but you are the one to make the pointe shoes move! So if you want a flattering, comfortable shoe that lets you move easily and naturally, this is the perfect one.
03/30/08 by Love2dance from California The ultimate shoe!
Rating: 4 These are sooo comfortable. They have padding in the heel and toe so you can wear them without pads and your feet wont hurt! However, they don't work your feet and make them stronger.
03/12/08 by Kelsee from Georgia Freedom!!!
Rating: 5 I absolutly love this shoe! I feel so free when I am dancing on pointe. I feel I am wearing the shoe rather then the shoe wearing me. Very comfortable. Feels as if you're dancing on air!
02/21/08 by Becca from Missouri Most FABULOUS pointe shoes ever!!!
Rating: 5 I love these pointe shoes, they are amazing. But many of the other girls at my dance studio had many complaints. But I didn't listen to them and I still got them anyway and I love them! I actually feel comfortable wearing these pointe shoes! Buy them!
02/12/08 by Jenny from Salt Lake City, UT Not For Me
Rating: 1 For me, Gaynor Mindens were the absolute worst. I had them fitted properly by a trained professional, but they caused me terrible pain and I never felt like I was over my shoe. I have long toes and strong arch. I always felt like my strong feet were doing battle with these shoes. I had two pairs and I ended up giving both of them away because I couldn't stand them. Many people I've danced with swear by these shoes, but, based on my experience, I would not recommend them.
02/11/08 by Alli Love Them!
Rating: 5 I have never had anything but Gaynor Mindens and I don't think I ever will!
02/03/08 by Emma from Soldotna AK Rating: 5 I love these shoes. I have worn others but nothing this fitting and comfortable in all my 8 years of dancing pointe. This is a fabulous shoe and I will change to another brand again.
01/19/08 by Anni from Petersburg, Alaska Rating: 5 I've worn these shoes ever since I started and I LOVE them! They fit my feet sooo well and I love that they are just about unbreakable AND you can get different shanks, they are perfect for me! Also, they are so comfortable on my feet!
12/01/07 by Vicki from OK Good and Bad
Rating: 3 I was a serious dancer when I was young, but nowadays, I only dance as a part of my fitness routine. Naturally, my feet are not as strong as I would like them to be, but thanks to GM, I can dance semi-decently in these shoes. However, because they offer pre-arched shank, I find it awkward when standing in flat. If you like to feel the floor when you are en pointe, you will need to use the lightest toe pads. Also, as many mentioned, I don't think they are aesthetically pleasing shoes, especially if your feet are wide. Their vamps and wings make your feet look flat and wide when not en pointe. The satin fabric is also too shiny for my taste. That being said, if you are a "leisure" dancer like me with proper training in the past, and if you wish to get by your pointe class with less pain, these shoes are suitable. They are definitely not for young dancers in training.
11/28/07 by Susan from Santa Cruz The only pointe shoes that make sense
Rating: 5 How could someone say that Mindens do the work for you en pointe? YOU have to do the work to dance: no shoe can dance for you. If you're lazy in these shoes, you're probably lazy in all shoes. Pointe shoes were not created from paper and glue because they were the best or most sensible materials to make shoes out of; they were simply the only technology available back then. Why torture your feet with what amounts to a hunk of overpriced cardboard and satin? (AKA traditional pointe shoes). I've never had a SINGLE blister, bruised toenail, or sore anything in these shoes, and this helps me concentrate on my dancing. And the only strength you need is the strength to dance--other shoes feel like they make you work "harder" because you are working against primitive materials and poor support. If you can perform well in Gaynors, then you have all the strength you need. Trust me--if you are sensible and conscientious about technique, you will benefit from wearing this shoes. They are wonderful.
11/22/07 by Kate from SLC,UT Rating: 5 AMAZING! These are the only kinds of pointe shoes that I can dance in.
11/15/07 by AML The best shoes ever made-in my opinion
Rating: 5 After many, many, many other pairs of traditional pointe shoes, I tried GMs. They were the best shoes (not just pointe shoes!) I have ever had. Even though my feet require a harder shank, these shoes offer flexibility, comfort, and quietness. GO GAYNORS!
11/12/07 by EmmyGal Learn about pre-arched shanks! Okay shoe
Rating: 3 Pre-arched doesn't mean the shank does the work on pointe. Those of us with high arches find pre-arched shanks to be more comfortable *when standing flat* until the shoe is broken in and conforms to our true arch shape. It's no different from wearing orthotic arch supports in our street shoes. If you don't require orthotics, you might not need pre-arched shanks either. I sometimes wear GMs, but definitely prefer my Grishkos and RPs. But I alternate between GMs and russian style paste shoes - this way, I don't lose strength as many dancers have done when relying solely on GMs fitted with too soft a shank. Their Hard shank is the only one I've found that actually feels like the foot has to work. I hate the platforms which are twice as wide as what I'm used to balancing on. I also think they're ugly. But halfway through a long rehearsal day, these feel wonderfully soft and comfy and don't require an ounce of padding.
10/06/07 by Emily from Florida weaken your feet
Rating: 1 These shoes are not good for your feet at all. If you're interested in getting these pointe shoes DO NOT! The other reviews may seem great but the only reason is because they are, as I call them, "cheater shoes." Who doesn't like to cheat?! I have been on pointe for about 4 years now, and I tried these my 3rd-4th year. I admit when I got these pointe shoes I loved them. I felt so great when I was wearing them and everything became easier, but now I've realized that they have only made my feet weaker! Stick with the original, old fashion pointe shoes, there is a reason why they have been around so long... because they work!
09/30/07 by Ashley from Texas I luv GM
Rating: 5 I just started pointe not long ago and started with Capezio. I had a hard time breaking in considering it is the hardest shoe to break- in. Normally, a teacher would not want you to get a shoe that's somewhat broken in. So we went to the store and found out that this shoe is not only somewhat broken in but it fit my foot perfectly. I have a low arch from dancing so much and wearing low arch shoes and I have a narrow foot and long toes(perfect for pointing). Also, what's great about this is that it already has padding in it and it feels like a Nike shoe. Ever since then, my pointe is getting better.
09/20/07 by Rachel from Plano, TX Rating: 3 OK, so they are comfortable and didn't make my feet bloody, but a shoe that is fitted correctly shouldn't make your feet bloody either. However, it was extremely hard to roll through demi pointe in them and I couldn't feel the floor. My dancing was so much better in a normal pointe shoe that was fitted correctly. Give me my Grishkos!
09/19/07 by Jess from New Jersey Amazing!
Rating: 5 I love these shoes. I have been doing pointe for 3 years and I have never been able to find a shoe that can stand up to my feet. I was a gymnast for 10 years and got injured and switched to dance, therefore my feet are super strong and really wide. In the matter of seven months I had gone through 4 pairs of pointe shoes. These lasted almost a full year by themselves. LOVE THEM!
09/14/07 by Natalie from Alexandria, VA The Nike of pointe shoes
Rating: 5 I LOVE these shoes! This is my first pair of GM shoes and they feel so much better than my old Blochs. My feet were hurting and cramped up en pointe with my old shoes and these are so comfy, it's like putting on slippers. I would really recommend these shoes.
09/02/07 by Tiny Dancer Torn
Rating: 4 These shoes are by far the most comfortable shoes to dance in. There is no disputing that. But I am really torn between comfort or strength. I got these shoes when I was first fitted at 12 and I danced in them for two years. They are now dirty but still in great shape. Now that I've taken up pointe again (5 years later) I am getting Blochs to build my strength in my feet. My feet are now in the most pain they have ever been in! I must admit, I miss the comfort and reassurance of my Gaynor Mindens.
08/20/07 by Anonymous WOW!
Rating: 5 This should be the only pointe shoe dancers wear.
08/20/07 by Renee Rating: 5 I'm sick of everyone saying these are cheater shoes. If they are the only shoes you wear and they work fine, then you don't need all the strength to hold you up. And since these are the only pointe shoes approved by physical therapists, then you know they are safe.
08/16/07 by Bethany from Oregon Rating: 1 If you prefer to feel as if you are sluggishly stretching and working nothing when up on pointe, I would highly suggest Gaynor Mindens. Also if you prefer a shoe that looks rather odd on most feet and is adorned with the most synthetic pink satin color, then these are for you. Call me picky but my Gaynor Mindens were a major let-down.
08/13/07 by Mackenzie from Utah These are the best
Rating: 5 These are the pointe shoes that the studio owner had us get and I don't regret it. I have no arch—my foot is as flat as a board. I got the ultra-flex and she made me get a different shank. I had to get supple even though I waited TWO MONTHS. These are the BEST.
08/03/07 by Krista Lee from Connecticut Rating: 5 Even though these are the only pair of pointe shoes I've ever worn, they are by far the best brand ever!First of all, you don't need to break them in. Also, the tip of the box is flat, not rounded, so you can always be on your pointe. They support your foot, but they DO NOT do all the work for you! They are also fine for beginners. My teacher has us wear them because they are good for anyone's feet and are custom fitted too. All the different sizes of boxes, vamps, and hardness are perfect to get the fit you need. GAYNORS ROCK!!!
08/03/07 by DaiZ Rating: 1 Yes, these shoes are comfortable. Yes, these shoes last a long time. Yes, these shoes do not take too long to form to your feet. I definitely DO NOT recommend these shoes. They are pre-arched, therefore doing all the work for you when you are en pointe. They don't work your feet AT ALL. When you no longer use these shoes, your feet will feel different. Wanna know why? Because you have lost strength! You'll hardly be able to get over a shoe that isn't a "cheat shoe". At my studio, we're not even allowed to get these shoes anymore! And we're not the only ones. Many dance stores in my area have stopped selling them or supporting them in any way. Please, please, PLEASE consider before buying these shoes.
07/27/07 by Jenah from Honoululu, HI Beautiful arches!
Rating: 5 As long as I dance, I will never go back to regular pointe shoes. These pointe shoes make your feet look gorgeous! Even if you don't have great arches such as I do. They are so quiet and do not make that horrible 'clanking' noise. However, I do not recommend Gaynor Mindens if these are your first pair. Because if you don't know how to properly work the foot, your feet will not develop the strength it should when en pointe. But definite must have pointe shoes! Oh, the other down side is the Satin is very hard, which makes sewing an incredibly hard and painful experience.
07/04/07 by Natalie from Connecticut Great!
Rating: 5 The reason I absolutely love these shoes, is because not only do they look absolutely beautiful on anyone's feet, but they come in almost any size possible. If you are getting your first pair of GMs, you should go to a dance store and get them fitted in person, so you know it is right for your feet. These shoes are beautiful and comfortable. Anyone who says they are fake shoes or "only for beginners" are completely wrong. I highly recommend these shoes to anyone and everyone. BUY THIS PRODUCT!
07/03/07 by Danceaddict Ah-mazing!
Rating: 5 This was my first year en pointe and these were the shoes my teacher wanted me to get. I was absolutely flabbergasted that they needed no break-in time! While the other girls in class struggled to eleve onto pointe, I went up with ease. These are the ultimate pointe shoes!
06/27/07 by Diana from Los Angeles, CA Just not for me
Rating: 2 2.5 stars: I first don't like that they're pre-arched. They feel weird all the time because of that and I just can't get used to it. If you need it, fine, but I prefer to make my feet do the work. I also had a 4 box but my big toe is in so much pain, even with all sorts of padding, I've given up on them. They seemed great at first but because they don't break-in, they never mold to your feet. They just stay the way they are, so make sure they fit perfect from day one. If they aren't perfect, they never will be. I also think they are INCREDIBLY difficult to sew ribbons on. My fingers hurt almost as much as my feet after sewing one or two sides on. I'm moving on to Russian Pointes next; I've heard a lot of good things.
06/23/07 by Anonymous from Michigan Okay at first
Rating: 2 At first these pointe shoes seemed amazing, I wished I had gotten them sooner. They were beautiful to begin with, and made my low arches look fabulous. After wearing them for a while though, they have gotten odd lines on the soles of them, as well as very dirty, and bag when I go on half pointe. Also, when I went to try on a pair of my old Blochs, I felt as if my feet were extremely weak. Overall, I would not recommend these shoes unless you just want a shoe that feels good and is pretty at first. I feel like they're making me take a step back, like I'll have to re-strengthen my feet with a new pair of shoes. When other comments said, 'They do all the work for you,' I didn't believe them, but now I'm finding that is exactly the case.
05/24/07 by Amelia Excellent shoe
Rating: 5 Really a terrific shoe, particularly for those of us who aren't blessed with gorgeous arches. I always had a hard time getting over my boxes before I got Gaynors, and now I have no problems. They're really quiet, too, and I like that you can select the box size, independent from the rest of the shoe-- I have narrow heels, so this is very helpful. It should be noted that although these don't need to be broken in, in the traditional sense, you have to wear them for two or three classes before they feel right. It's hard to explain-- they don't become more flexible, but they fit your feet better.

Rating: 3 I have been reading some of these reviews and I am surprised to read people writing about the Shank needing to break-in or nor breaking in properly. Hello people, GMs do not break in. They are as is. I just purchased a pair and am going back to pointe after an injury. I thought these would be a life saver, but I am having issues. First of all, they were fitted too narrow in the box. My foot is wide in the front and narrow in the back and the 3 box is cramming my toes. I have a 4 box ordered and will try them. These shoes are the most beautiful of any I have worn. They look very sleek and elegant. The supple shank is fabulous and makes my low arches look lovely. I feel stronger and the shoes are so light and quiet. I highly recommend them if you get the right fit. But I don't think they work for everyone and maybe not for me either. I find the box not long enough and not supportive enough and I have the deep vamp. If you have short toes, these would be perfect, but my feet are just normal. All in all, these are worth a try.
05/15/07 by Kake from Coleraine,MN THE BEST POINTE SHOES!!!
Rating: 5 I love these shoes. I love them because I feel safe in them. I would recommend getting these shoes if you have not had luck with any other pointe shoes.
05/12/07 by Vickie from Dalton, MA Rating: 5 As a physical therapist and dancer, married to a Rheumatologist, we were hesitant about allowing our daughters to dance en point! We understood only too well, difficult dance injuries and foot traumas. Gaynor Minden has been the only shoes both of our girls have worn. Yes, they are not as "pretty" as other brands, but our girls' advanced level of dancing without injuries and with healthy feet, are proof enough of their worth. Over half of the dancers at the studio now wear these remarkable shoes.
05/11/07 by Anonymous DISASTER!
Rating: 1 I haven't yet found a pair of pointe shoes that are right for my feet, since they're so problematic, my teacher suggested GM's. Yes the cushioning was nice, but I fell out the front of them, and it was the deepest vamp. They looked horrible on my wide feet, and the hard shank was too soft and me feet looked like claws in them. They might be right for some people's feet, but there was nothing good about them for me! I would not suggest them to anyone!
05/10/07 by Tabi from Texas Eh . . .
Rating: 2 I used this brand for about a year and a half and did not like them. I bought a second pair after my first got too worn, just to give them another shot, since they lasted longer than the usual half month other brands last me, and that was so much easier on the wallet. However, when I switched back to my old brand, I discovered I had lost a little bit of strength in my feet. I found these shoes too clunky. I also don't recommend these for beginners. I have seen many younger girls who think these can make them dance better, when it really did the opposite. I have seen them work for other people, such as those who have had foot injuries of any sort, however, these shoes were not for me at all.
05/05/07 by Alea from El Paso , TX Rating: 4 I really liked these shoes but I do know people who have not found as much comfort in them as I have. I thought they were really comfy (comfy enough to wear without toe pads). The only problem I've had with them is that I grew and I was in between sizes!!!
04/17/07 by Maddie from South Carolina I would sleep in them!
Rating: 5 This is the best shoe ever! It is so comfy, and actually saves you money, because they last so long! Gaynors seem to be made of a thicker satin, so they stay clean longer. Most of my pointe class has them and loves them! This will be the best investment you will ever make in your ballet life!
04/09/07 by Gayner lover from Boston AMAZING!!!
Rating: 5 These shoes are the best thing that ever happened to me. Not only have they improved my alignment, but they have also made me work harder technically. Forget everything Gaynor haters have told you. Once at a technicaly advanced point in your career, these shoes will only help you achieve perfection! I would recomend them for any dancer not born with amazing feet!
04/07/07 by Kristen Rating: 3 I got these to help me get over my box, and they were great! But after only a month, it hurt just to wear them. Also, don't get these if you have a wide wing.
03/30/07 by Carrie AMAZING
Rating: 5 My ankles have been severely inflamed with tendonitis for the past six months. I was having trouble rehearsing even one dance, full-out on pointe, because I was getting so weak and was in so much pain. I tried these as a last resort and my feet feel like they are in heaven. If you are injured, do yourself a favor and try these wonderful shoes. You don't even need toe pads.
03/27/07 by Angel on Toes from Georgia Get educated!
Rating: 5 Younger dancers and beginners should not use this shoe unless recommended by your instructor! This shoe is good for strong feet, high arches, extremely hard-to-fit shapes. A few girls saw mine and told their parents they HAD to have them. They were all wrong for Gaynor Minden. You can go to Dancer.com and learn all about the parts of this shoe. If you are above 140 lbs., this may not be the best shoe for you. Most students need ExtraFlex shanks. If you are not so strong yet, I recommend Hard shank, with time to break them in! Strong, light and experienced dancers may prefer Supple.
03/22/07 by momandmeme PERFECTO!
Rating: 5 What more can be said? I'm an older dancer ... actually coming back after many years off (married, family) I've tried MANY pointe shoes. Most of them broke-in well then DIED after a month! I was worried that coming back after the years, this shoe would not give me the support needed( body changes with age and kids). So I started with Grishkos --great shoe but you will need several pairs due to the 3- day dry out time (figured that out the hard and expensive way)...($50-$80 a pair x 3 = $150 -$240) I tried others as well (some good, some a waste of $). The GM is a unique shoe and I had tried these on before with my fitter. I fell in love with them (wrong size box in stock) ... so I went to the GM website, researched, placed and ordered( with DDS). I was MOST impressed when the company called me to confirm the proper fit, they actually spent TIME asking Important questions. WOW! NO OTHER COMPANY has EVER done that! As a dancer, I was impressed. As a parent of two dancers, I was more impressed due to the fact I am not wasting money. The shoe fit to a tee! Looks? Unless your CONSTANTLY on stage and there are "important" critics out there, who cares? Are you dancing better than ever? (I am) Are you enjoying NO "better comfort",(no blisters, bad toenails --I am). Support? Read the comments from the pros out there! They are right on!!! Ladies ... Ballet is a WORK of art. IF you are using your body correctly, then it will not matter what shoe(unless your shoe is improperly fitted, which I find a lot). Granted, some are better for some feet than others, but I would recommend them to all. As a dancer and a mother of two dancers!
03/20/07 by KT from Livonia, MI Finally a shoe that fits!
Rating: 5 When I started out on pointe shoes, my dance teacher put me in Gambas. I have a rather small foot: wide at the front of the foot, narrow at the heel, and a VERY high arch. The Gambas looked nice, but whenever I would rise en pointe, my foot arched so much, the top of my foot was popping out. I couldn't break in the shank because I wasn't able to apply pressure in the right part of the arch. I finally tried the Gaynor Mindens and they are Fantastic! You can buy the shank "broken in" as much as you would like. I also purchased them with a sleek heel to fit around my small heel. These shoes are the best for my type of foot. Very comfortable -- very few blisters. I would recommend anyone having a hard time fitting into the "traditional" pointe shoes, to try these. The options seem limitless!
03/18/07 by Anonymous AMAZING
Rating: 5 If I could, I would give these pointe shoes 10 stars!!! They make rolling through demi-pointe so easy. I love the light padding already inside. I don't need to wear pads with the shoes. They make pointe effortless but still keep you on your toes(lol!). I would prefer the color to be more of the light European Pink like Grishko though. Oh Well!
03/17/07 by Green Olive Rating: 5 I had trouble with my first pair of pointe shoes from Freed. I could not get on the tip as well as I should. My instructor suggested Gaynor Minden and ever since then, I have been doing great on pointe. My feet are wide and they look wider in GM but I don't care, I am just happy I can do pointe as well as some of my other ballet friends!
03/14/07 by Dani from Weston, WI AMAZING
Rating: 5 I bought these shoes my second year in pointe and have loved them ever since. I won't buy any other brand. They are worth every penny and really save your feet from painful blisters.
03/14/07 by Jade from Kansas City, MO Dancer and teacher, these shoes rock
Rating: 5 So I wore Gaynors for years. I got sick of them (they aren't the prettiest on my wide wide foot) so I tried other shoes. For six months, I struggled to get up all the way on different Bloch shoes. I have a high arch, but for some reason, the Blochs would be great at first, then as they broke in, I would be pulled back -- barely on point, my nice arch not showing, and struggling to dance! After getting through Nutcracker performances with shoes I could barely dance in (and that lasted only a few weeks) I switched back to Gaynors. Man am I happier. They don't look as pretty on my feet as "regular" pointe shoes, but they feel great, I dance well in them, and they last. (I have three kids and can't afford to buy pointe shoes every month!) I know they are not for everybody, but for me they are IT! Dancers need to realize Gaynors don't break in like other pointe shoes --how they fit is how they will continue to fit, so the proper size is essential! I love them, and won't ever switch again!
03/13/07 by Annie from London Better do proper fitting
Rating: 3 I had to admit, GM is not for everyone. At first, I felt great with them but after two months, I found I was losing my strength. I realised that I cannot go on fully pointed position with GM. So, GM doesn't fit to my arch! It bends under my toes, which makes me unstable. The thing is, shoe fitters cannot see how you dance on pointe in the studio.
03/10/07 by Lanna Awesome durable shoes.
Rating: 5 These pointe shoes are amazing. I was sick of buying pointe shoes every week because my feet are strong. I bought Gaynor Mindens last year, in February, for a performance I was in. I am still wearing them. And I don't just wear them one time a week, I wear them several days a week too. Only today, am I buying a new pair. You get more worth out of these shoes than what you pay for. Awesome shoes. I recommend to get the Jet Glue to put on the seams, so they do not rip.
03/10/07 by Melanie Rating: 5 Some dancers think these shoes are so bad, but they are not. Gaynor Mindens offer me more than the other pointe shoes. Blochs and Grishkos, and all the other shoes I've had, don't bother me, but Gaynor mindens just offer more comfort, and more balance. Every dancer has their own opinion about these GORGEOUS shoes!!! For me, they are the best shoes I've ever had!!! I strongly recommend these for any dancer!
03/08/07 by Number 16 from Sarasota Rating: 5 I had my first pair of GMs for six months. Don't tell me that's not a long time. In the last month though, the tips wore off and got down to the plastic on the inside. With the plastic showing, I slipped a couple times, but that's why GM made the suede tips to put over them.(I just used giant bandaids and they were fine.) Definitely sticking with them and just want to add that they align your foot so well. I have a bad rolling-in problem with my foot when on pointe, and these shoes instantly corrected me. Even on flat, I've seen a difference. POWER TO GILLIAN MURPHY!
03/07/07 by Hannah from California Rating: 3 I like these shoes, but only for adagio and jumps.
Turns? No way!
They just don't turn well.
I have a really high arch and these shoes never really broke in, but I prefer regular pointe shoes.
03/05/07 by Eden from Connecticut Awesome
Rating: 4 These were my first pair of pointe shoes, but they are great. They have a soft bottom. Which makes them very comfortable. They come in small sizes too.
03/01/07 by Die4dance from Omaha, NE Rating: 5 I just ordered a pair of shoes from Discount Dance and they haven't come yet. Me being stupid, read the reviews of that shoe and everyone said that they break down really fast. I looked at the Gaynors and read the reviews and was like 'mom we are definitely returning those other shoes and getting these.' I can't wait till my Gaynors come!!!
02/23/07 by Lynnie from Aspen,CO Rating: 5 My daughter has gone through almost every pointe shoe there is. GM has been the best so far. They hold up longer than any other pointe shoe in the past and they are fairly easy to break in.
02/22/07 by Kelsey from New Jersey THE BEST!
Rating: 5 I love these shoes! They give you so much more support than Capezio. I naturally have a VERY high arch, so every pointe shoe that I wore before only lasted a week. I have had these for at least a month and they still don't even feel like they are broken in yet. I recommend them to anyone who is looking for new pointe shoes.
02/16/07 by Ashley from Las Vegas Good if your strong enough!
Rating: 4 OK, well, I LOVE my Gaynor Mindens to death and the only bad thing I can say about them is that they are quite boxy. And they make SOME people's feet look boxy, big, flat, or unattractive. For others, their feet look beautiful, professional, and look like they aren't working to balance, etc. For people who think that beginners shouldn't wear them, they are right. UNLESS the person has EXTREMELY strong feet. And, if you think these shoes are "cheat shoes" or "easy pointe shoes", there is no such thing; If you are wearing a properly sized shoe, and are using them properly. GMs are the only pair of pointe shoes I have kept for half a year.
NOT RECOMMENDED FOR: Weak beginners, people who are looking for "cheat shoes"
RECOMMENDED FOR: People who have strong feet, good arches, break paste shoes within 3-6 practices.
NOTE: DO NOT BUY THESE SHOES JUST FOR COMFORT UNLESS YOU'RE GOING TO WORK PROPERLY IN THEM!
02/13/07 by Anonymous from New York Looks count too
Rating: 3 I have never worn these shoes before, but two of my friends wear them. They say that the shank never gets weaker and it is really comfortable because it has cushions. But I don't really think that they are that pretty. It makes the foot look really skinny from the side and it makes you not have a pretty arch, which I find, is not attractive. So I decided not to buy them.

Rating: 5 I used to love Capezio Contemporas; when I discovered Gaynor Mindens in 1999, I put the Contemporas away. I became a stronger dancer in GMs, and my rate of injury went way down. That's really important to remember as we grow older, and look at the statistics: one out of every one dancer will grow older!
Gaynor Minden pointe shoes help you to feel the floor much better--you might not even need anything in the shoes except your foot. Just try some bourees in a pair of properly fitted GMs; there's no way to describe the difference until you do. GMs are also quieter, & they won't fall apart if you get them wet! The complainers haven't read the GM manual & don't understand how these pointe shoes are supposed to fit & work, and how important the custom fitting really is. Some people want to be stuck in a previous age & call advances in technology "cheating". That's like saying that facemasks on football helmets are cheating because they didn't have them a century ago . . . So please remember to read the manual, don't judge without having all the facts, and above all, be kind! Your audience watches you offstage too.
02/11/07 by Rachel Rating: 5 GMs have given me more control on pointe and I recommend them to anyone who has trouble getting completely on your toes. They are the most comfortable shoes I have ever wor. They look amazing on feet and I can spot dancers when wearing them. Everyone should wear Gaynors!
02/07/07 by Ilivetodance Saves me money. :)
Rating: 5 This is my longest lasting pointe shoe to date. I have been on pointe for about four years and have gone through endless pairs of shoes. I do not recommend this shoe for beginners though. I think it is still best to learn to roll through your feet in traditional pointe shoes, as this may be hard to do on GMs, unless you already have strong feet. The main reason I decided to make the switch was because I used to need a new pair of shoes each month. This is because my feet are arched and sweaty, and I dance about 2-3 hours everyday. Upon switching to GMs, I noticed that they supported my feet more and prevented me from "going over to far". I disagree with others saying these are cheater shoes. If you choose the appropriate stiffness for your strength, solid technique and no sense of reliance on these shoes, they will in fact make you stronger.
02/06/07 by Emma Rating: 2 I can always tell when others are wearing Gaynor Mindens 'cause of the flatness of them. I wore one pair for 3 weeks and ditched them because I felt like a cheater. To me, pointe shoes should support your feet, not do all the work for them.
02/04/07 by Annie from New York Rating: 2 I absolutely hateeee Gaynors, but I do wear them- haha. They're cheater shoes, and they are too soft for my feet [I have a high arch]. For girls who don't,I recommend these =]
02/03/07 by Shamira from Portland, OR Rating: 2 These shoes feel terrific when you first put them on but wear them a bit before you sew ribbons to be sure they are a good match for your feet. After 2 days, I found that I could not feel my toes working in the shoe and it was hard for me to stay en pointe in these shoes when doing bourees or pirouettes. Also, these shoes do not make my foot look pretty at all and they are even somewhat unattractive to me. I can spot GMs immediately on others and they just aren't as cute with the orangey color and flattened vamp. On a lighter note, balancing is easy on the GM platform. All in all, GMs are the perfect shoe for some and the worst for others. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground. Best of luck!
01/23/07 by M. Luv 'em
Rating: 5 For any dancer. This is my second year in pointe, but third pair. I luv them sooooo much! Well made and shaped also. Five trillion stars!
01/20/07 by Dancer Amazing But Tough To Sew Ribbons!!!
Rating: 5 I just got Gaynor Mindens. These shoes are really amazing!!! I think they are perfect for any dancer. The only problem is that it is so hard to get a needle through the pointe shoes!!! I highly recommend them. They are the perfect brand!!!
01/16/07 by Anonymous from Canada What a relief
Rating: 4 Gaynor Minden pointe shoes have been a huge relief in the few months that I have been wearing them. Firstly, they stand up to my very high insteps and they let me use the full mobility of my ankles without feeling to precarious. And secondly, they look sleek and streamlined and the options in sizing allow for a really good fit. These shoes are NOT for beginners, I wore them years ago when I was starting pointe and it was a disaster, but now they allow me to articulate through my feet while also providing a great deal of support. Another benefit to these shoes is the way it feels to do grand allegro... if anything, they enhance my elevation rather than weighing me down and feeling clunky. Hurray!
01/12/07 by Anonymous Rating: 5 I've had Gaynor Minden pointe shoes for a couple of years now, they are amazing. I feel very confident in them and that they will support me, no complaints about this shoe, I love them.
12/24/06 by Melanie Rating: 5 These shoes are so beautiful. They are very comfortable, and they don't give me pain like the other pointe shoes!
12/19/06 by Jacki K. from SF, CA Good for problem feet
Rating: 5 I used to wear Chacotts because they were one of the few shoes I could find, that had fabric wings instead of the hard material, that would squeeze and hurt my bunion. Then I found GMs, which have the same feature, and are much more durable. They don't kill my bunion and last a long time.
12/15/06 by Anonymous from Italy Horrible!
Rating: 1 I have to admit it... I HATE these shoes. I tried them and I have to say they are the worst shoes I've ever worn. I lost strength and balance and you can get injured with these pointe shoes much more easily than with other shoes, like Freeds or Grishkos. Besides, they make your feet look horrible. So, I don't recommend them for any dancer, unless you want your feet to look stiff and low arched or get injured. I hate these shoes! Grishkos are sooooooooo much better!
12/06/06 by Ellie These are the best
Rating: 5 These shoes are the best for every beginner pointe dancer or for old pros. They form to your foot and really support your arch. Thanks Gaynor Minden!
11/26/06 by Kate from Chicago Trust me: Run away, run away!
Rating: 2 Comfortable, yes. And yet... Not a fan of the fact that when the toe wears out, electric blue plastic (of all things) is exposed-- which also happens to be treacherously slippery. As far as how well they work, I do not have the prettiest feet in the world (they are super strong but not so archy unfortunately) so I wore these for awhile (about 3 years) thinking they helped with aesthetics. When I went back to "regular" pointe shoes (Freed Studios) when these were out of stock once, every single person in my class told me how much better my feet looked in something else (and again, I do NOT have great feet). Honestly, unless you have Paloma feet, they make it look like you have pancakes strapped to your ankles-- they are so freakishly flat in profile. Although I wasn't letting myself get "lazy" in them, I did notice a *profound* difference in how I went about transferring my weight when I returned to a traditional shoe. I basically had to re-learn to pirouette on pointe-- not cool, especially when you've been dancing for years and years. Don't get sucked into the allure (although man, how nice not to need a new pair every few classes)--they lull you into a false sense of security. And let's face it, ballet is not natural or comfortable. Bottom line: Your pointe shoes should not feel like the shoes you wear to the gym. And this is coming from the girl who wore Gaynors for a loooong time.
11/23/06 by Vangie Rating: 5 I love this shoe. I have tried many but this is the one. It really defines my foot and helps me strengthen my technique. You guys are great.
11/07/06 by PointeDancingPro from Northeastern Ohio I Love these shoes!
Rating: 5 I like these shoes because they don't break every 3 weeks like my traditional paste point shoes. I have had my current pair of GM's for at least 3 months, which is a record compared to the paste shoes. AND, these shoes are NOT "cheat shoes" as long as the person wearing the shoes is: pulling up through-out their body, uses their spotting on all balances and turns, is pulling up and out of the box of the shoe, and is on top of the full box of the shoe. If the dancer is doing that in a regular shoe, they COULD try GMs. If they switch to GMs, and they stop doing any of those items above, they REALLY SHOULD go back to a traditional paste pointe shoe because they are using the GMs pre-arch to support them. When they do that, they could seriously injure themselves. Then they might not need pointe shoes anymore!
10/30/06 by Lauren from California Rating: 5 I love these shoes! My first shoes were awful and didn't support my arch at all. These make my feet look beautiful and as long as you're working through your feet and using them properly, you can get very strong from them. I'm very new to pointe (only one year) but these have been the only pointe shoes that truly support my feet.
10/30/06 by K from California Rating: 5 These shoes are only "cheater" pointe shoes if you allow them to be. That's why you are not supposed to get the shank too stiff, because it CAN prop you up instead of working your way up to the platform, but it won't do that if you are properly fitted and if the shank is the right stiffness. They are only "cheater" pointe shoes to those who cheat. I love this shoe, it lasts forever (not literally!). And no, my feet aren't weak, because I use my shoes correctly. I am not trying to diss other people, I'm just trying to explain that these shoes aren't fake, and they are truly great if you aren't lazy.
10/26/06 by Jessi from Ohio Eh. OK.
Rating: 3 To all the people who said these are "cheater shoes" your right and wrong. Right because they have a pre formed arch, but wrong because I blew through a pair of Sanshas in one week. So if you think I have weak feet, you're wrong.
They are comfortable, but only meant for certain feet, which are not mine.
10/24/06 by Tracy from Mobile, AL Dancer Loves Gaynor Mindens
Rating: 5 My dancer insisted I buy the Gaynor Minden shoe again. She swears it comes almost broken in and is the most comfortable she has ever worn.
10/14/06 by Sadie from Wisconsin Fabulous!
Rating: 5 I have been on pointe for about five years now and have tried a number of different shoes. I have shallow arches and sometimes found it hard to get over my box all the way, but with these shoes my feet always look great! Also, a lot of people think they weaken the ankles, but (for me anyways) I haven't noticed any loss of strength. I actually feel I am much stronger with these shoes! They are not right for everyone though, so it is reasonable for some people to disagree.... Doesn't every brand have people that love and hate it? So why pick on this one so much!
09/26/06 by Jackie Rating: 5 I love Gaynor Minden shoes because they are the only shoe that I can't kill within three classes. The other shoes were really hard on my budget, as I was going through three pairs a month. I'm never going back!
09/24/06 by Anonymous from Philadelphia The Best!
Rating: 5 You really can't get a shoe that is better than this. Seriously. They are so comfortable, you don't even need toe pads! And don't believe what everyone else says about these being 'cheater shoes', 'fake pointe shoes' or anything else like that. The only reason people talk about them like that is because their feet are not strong enough to roll through them. You kinda have to have strong feet to work the shoe. A lot of people also say that these shoes are bad. They are not bad. You just have to be a good dancer to make them work. If you are not a good dancer, no shoe will be good for you. Trust me. These will not make pointe easier (nothing ever will) but they are pretty much the best you can get. Wow. That was definitely the longest review that I've ever written!
09/22/06 by Linda from Miami aha
Rating: 1 Whatever: You think your feet are strong but you are not working them in these fake pointe shoes. If you really are a good dancer you know what I'm talking about. I'm used to dancing in the Cuban technique and I know what strong feet are.
09/20/06 by GM fan Ok Whatever
Rating: 5 Most of the past reviews said stuff like... not good for beginners and good for Pros... WELL YA KNOW WHAT? I'm in my second year en Pointe and for the 1 year, I went through at least 1 pair of Capezios a month through that 1st year. For Summer and these Fall classes, I've used GMs for them and I CAN TELL THE TRUTH... you can be a beginner and use GMs as long as: your feet are strong, you get them fitted right, and you can wear these shoes (be recommended by your teacher).
09/20/06 by Marzipan Candy AWESOME
Rating: 5 I give GMs a 5 star because they are really comfortable. I have only been on Pointe for 2 years now, but I NEEDED their box strength. My Capezio Pointe shoes were good but, my feet were so strong they broke the box every 2 weeks! GMs have the arch and support I need for my feet. AND I MUST SAY TO THE PEOPLE WHO SAY GMs ARE "EASY POINTE SHOES" if the person wearing the Pointe shoes is working their WHOLE body, the shoes are just like every other Pointe shoe.
09/20/06 by Kristen Rating: 2 I loved these shoes when I first got them, but after two months of dancing on them, they're the most painful thing imaginable!
09/19/06 by Megan from Montana Only for strong but stiff feet
Rating: 4 I have really stiff feet and ankles and I absolutely love that it is no longer a check-every-time-to-see-if-I'm-on-my-box-or-not situation. They are definitely not for beginners; I got mine after 2 1/2 years of pointe. Rolling through demi-pointe can be a bit of a hassle though. Otherwise, these shoes are MARVELOUS.
09/18/06 by Jen from Dallas Super
Rating: 5 My favorite shoe ever. I will never use another!
09/17/06 by Chelsea from Yreka CA Rating: 5 I am not en pointe yet but will be soon. I think these shoes are so pretty and are very clean. I like how you get to customize your shoe to fit your needs. I want to get these shoes eventually but let my teacher pick my first pair of pointes.
09/17/06 by Caitlyn Lace from California Simply the BEST!

Many years ago at a summer camp at the Rock school, the Gaynor Minden family was passing out their literature and giving test try-ons. They were different and pretty and intriguing... but I passed- being young (13) and already having had my parents fork over a load of money on new summer shoes... Then a couple months later my brother heard an interview on NPR about them and told me all about them. Now my whole family was convinced they were worth a fitting and a visit. So I went to New York to their main headquarters and met them and tried on several pairs and found what I liked. I was a fan! Then I went to study in Europe and they (Gaynor Minden) would periodically send me test pairs and had me hand out lierature at the opera ballet school to my friends. I managed to convert a couple girls! And for years I wore the exact same size and shank and width and blah blah blah.... Until I went to my old pointe shoe to check the size to order a new pair and it was soooo faded and just plain gone that I made an educated guess online for my new pair - and even though they were different they fit like a dream- better than before! I've always worn my Gaynor Mindens for months and months at a time sometimes years!!- and I am constantly performing so I usually only get new ones when the last pair starts to well.... smell!! or are just too dirty to be presentable! 10 years later and I'm still in love. I have NEVER gotten a blister and I was trained that there is no reason to have mangled feet- a cast of Pavlova's feet after she died can prove this point(e)! And why not embrace the future of dance? I think it's a beautiful and brilliant creation and true that you must be a strong and professional dancer to truly appreciate what these shoes have to offer. These shoes flatter the feet, make legs look absolutely gorgeous, and provide support in all the right places. They are so easy. The only problem is they last so long... there should be some kind of cleaner or deodorizer for them!!!!
09/15/06 by Marielisa from Puerto Rico I don't like them
Rating: 3 These pointe shoes are good for a performance only but not for the daily classes. They look beautiful and your feet look great, but that is all they offer. I tried them once for my classes and I thought I was wearing fake pointe shoes, 'cause I was not working my feet. If I try them again, it will be for a performance.
09/10/06 by ENB from Danced all through CA... Great for strong dancers...
Rating: 5 I acquired my first pair of Gaynor Minden pointe shoes after 6+ years of pointe work and many more years of training. They are the most reliable and beautiful shoes I have ever worn. I must agree with the comments saying these shoes are best for trained dancers and should not be used by brand new pointe dancers. My teachers did not recommend these shoes to anyone unless they had been on pointe for several years. A pointe shoe is an extension of strong technique and footwork and should not be relied on to do all the "work." I particularly recommend this shoe to dancers who have limited funds because they last for a long time and cost roughly the same as a pair of Freeds...
09/04/06 by Aria from Mountain View, CA The pre-formed arch is the problem
Rating: 3 I tried these shoes twice and, while soft inside and they do last a long time, the pre-arched soles did not feel supportive. I am considering getting another pair, but heatin the soles and taking out the pre-arch. I crave the feeling of my feet having to do the work.
If I decide to spend the $70+ to do this, I will write a review of how it worked.
09/04/06 by Mary Anne from Washington, DC Good enough for world class dancers.....
Rating: 5 I have been reading through some of these reviews and am appalled at how many people are allowed to work on Pointe when it seems clear that they have no business doing so. Proper placement on Pointe requires totally correct body placement, and strength. The Gaynors are not the problem. The shoe is brilliantly designed for use by a well TRAINED dancer.
Anyone whose teachers have given them the gift of comprehending their own anatomical structure, muscle and bone physiology, would understand that the shoe does not and cannot make the foot weaker, if, the person is using the shoe correctly, and their ENTIRE body correctly. In fact, by supporting the foot so well, it guards against over use of the muscles and joints of the foot which can lead to stress fractures. Unfortunately, there are many, many, TERRIBLE ballet teachers in this country, many, with college degrees, ironically!! Only in America, can you open your own ballet studio and rip off so any clients for so many years, without the slightest clue that you do not know what you are doing!!
Proper fitting on a well trained dancer is the right formula to realize the potential of these shoes. For the well trained, ready, dancer, the most supple of the shanks is best.
If these shoes are good enough for some of the most amazing ballet athletes in the world class arena, then, I guess they are good enough for me, LOL! I love my GMs!!
08/17/06 by Kasey from Texas AWESOME
Rating: 5 I wasn't able to get all the way on my box with Repettos, my teacher says, because of the way my feet and toes are shaped. I have a very long foot with short and even toes. My toes don't even taper at all. I switched to Gaynor and was able to get all the way on my box and other than my big toenail being sore (even with pads) they are comfy. I'm trying to find the right pads to relieve pressure on my nail. But other than that, these shoes are easy to work in and beautiful. Hope that helps...
08/12/06 by Mari from New York Rating: 5 Gaynor Mindens are perfect for specific kinds of feet. If the shoe feels too mushy or doesn't flatter your foot, it doesn't mean it's a bad shoe, it just means they aren't right for you. I, however, love them. I have always had trouble finding shoes that look good with my rather weak arch and narrow foot. GMs look the best on me by far and are comfortable and quiet. And they HAVE NOT made my feet weaker!! If anything my feet have gotten stronger and now have a better arch. I find them VERY supportive and they last an incredibly long time, so they are worth the extra money! My only complaint is that they don't breath very well and can have a numbing effect on my toes. I have been on pointe for 6 years now and can say from experience, that these are wonderful shoes, if you have the right feet for them.
08/12/06 by Carolyn from Florida In Love
Rating: 5 I have been wearing GM's for two years now and I love them. I have not lost any strength while wearing them. They support my feet and are great for rolling through. I normally destroy my previous Hard shanked "traditional" shoes in less than a month, and I have had one pair last me a year. I love these so much. So, spend the money and get a great shoe.
08/08/06 by Sweet Caroline from Kansas City One of the best shoes ever created!
Rating: 5 These shoes are really great. They hold my foot in just the right position to make turning a cinch! I did a double pirouette en pointe and stayed. Something that I had never done with my previous shoes because I have terrible feet that 80% of pointe shoes hold me back. People that don't like these shoes probably didn't get sizing that worked with their feet, because if they look good on my feet, they look good on EVERYONE'S feet! Take my word and at least try them.
08/08/06 by Lola from Albany, NY The Perfect Shoes For Me!
Rating: 5 My GMs are my first pointe shoes ever, I just got them last year. I have the worst feet a dancer can have: wide, flat, and a pointe that looks like your feet are flexed! My teacher suggested I get pointe shoes to weaken my feet and to make them more flexible, so I did. I LOVE MY GMs. They are so flexible, which gives me the perfect support for my none flexible feet. Since my feet are wide, the #4 is the perfect, not to mention widest box of all pointe shoes for my very wide feet. Also, I'm seeing the shape of my feet change from using pointe shoes. I don't think I'll ever try a different type of pointe shoes! Gaynor Mindens are the best!
08/04/06 by Ky Rating: 5 I found the hard shank to be too soft for me. I do NOT have an arch- almost none at all, but my feet have had to work around that, so they are very strong. But the shoe isn't very supportive to my feet and I find myself knuckling on my left foot(it has a better arch than my right foot) and they aren't very flattering either. I don't like how they look- they have a very flat profile and the drawstring doesn't do much to make it a snugger fit. They were painful too when I did hops en pointe, but turning was easier because of the wide platform.
07/28/06 by Balletobsessed from North Carolina Wow!
Rating: 4 I have never actually danced in GMs, but I tried a pair on and they felt like high quality athletic shoes (with no padding). If you are like me and go through traditional shoes quickly, these are a perfect shoe. If you are worried about GMs making your feet weaker, switch off between traditional pointe shoes and these. That way you get the benefits of traditional shoes and the comfort and longevity of GMs. Also, these shoes are very easy to get over if you have an injury, like tendonitis, or very inflexible feet.
07/17/06 by Kayla from Ohio Wonderful!
Rating: 5 I've been doing pointe for now 3 years, and I've tried a few different pairs of shoes and these are by far the best yet! They support very well and look very nice and last longer than others. I am definitely buying these again!
07/14/06 by Jessie from Midlo, TX AWESOME! But, not good for beginners!!
Rating: 5 I Love my GMs! One problem, a new girl at my dance school wasn't very strong and was told to switch to GMs. She said they were so comfy and didn't hurt her feet. Well, she still wasn't very strong when you watched her dance. Perfect for a strong dancer but not for someone who isn't so strong!
07/13/06 by Christie from Miami, FL Rating: 2 I did not like these at all. They're very soft, sorta flimsy and don't give you much support at all...they're good to roll through pointe, but definitely not to 'spring' onto pointe like in turns. I got injured with these shoes, so if you're like me and like more hard, supportive pointes, don't get these!
07/09/06 by Anonymous ICK!
Rating: 1 Why do people keep on saying these are wonderful shoes? They do no "wonders" to your feet. All they do is make them weaker, people! Don't believe their ads that say they're the best, because they're certaintly not. I completly disapprove of this shoe.
06/29/06 by Gabby Five Stars Here!
Rating: 5 Positively a great shoe. I've only been on pointe about 3 1/2 years but until last year, I had always used traditional shoes. I had strong feet and a high arch but my feet were very skinny, especially my ankles, but my toes and balls of my feet are wide and stocky. As a result, traditional shoes were so painful because in order for the majority of the shoe to fit, I had to squeeze in my toes and balls, so going on relevee or even demi- pointe was excruciatingly painful. Finally, I got GM and they are a miracle shoe! And by the way, my feet are just as strong. But get them professionally fitted!
06/27/06 by Annie from Ohio They are...ok
Rating: 4 Gaynors are the only pointe shoes I have tried. They are very comfortable; especially for a pointe shoe. Although, they are "cheater shoes" and I would like to develop a more stronger arch, which I can't really achieve with Gaynors. They are wonderful though, and of course I love them!
06/19/06 by Jill from Ohio Rating: 3 I wore Gaynors for about a year and they were pretty good, because they accentuated my high arch plus, they were very comfortable. I have switched to Sansha since, because my heels often slipped out of the shoe and I found myself working much harder with the Sanshas because Gaynors, as someone else said, "cheat". Pros: Last longer than other shoes and are comfortable. Cons: They are rather boxy and you don't build as much strength as you would in a "regular" pointe shoe.
06/05/06 by Jessica from Palos Verdes Horrible
Rating: 1 These are one of the worst pairs of shoes I have tried. I wore these for one class and didn't like them. They are comfortable, but they look weird. I'm more of the traditional pointe shoe. These do nothing to your feet. They are kind of a cheating pointe shoe in the way it's built. I don't recommend these pointe shoes to beginners.
06/03/06 by Rachel from Pittsburgh Only for pros performing
Rating: 1 I wore these for about a year. In that year, I lost most of my strength and got Achilles tendinitis in both legs. They're nice for performances because they don't need broken in and they look nice on most feet. But for everyday wear, DO NOT WEAR THEM. I've known many people that became weak and injured from wearing them everyday. Definitely a performance shoe, NOT FOR BEGINNERS OR THOSE WHO ARE WEAK.
05/31/06 by Anonymous Rating: 4 These are the best shoes I've ever tried. I would suggest these to those who don't have as flexible feet. They have helped me.
05/26/06 by Anonymous Rating: 2 Though they are very comfortable, they do absolutely nothing for your feet. Absolutely not for beginners. I am fairly new to pointe(3-4 years) and my first two pairs were traditional pointe shoes. My third and fourth pair being GM's and I know they did not do anything because when I switched to Bloch, I was definitely not as strong as I thought I was. Also they make your toes black and blue. They are also very unflattering, make your feet look extremely narrow.
05/22/06 by Paige from California Rating: 5 I have had Gaynor Mindens for about 2 weeks now. What I like about it, is that they were ready to wear right away and that they were SO comfy. They have pretty good balancing when standing flat which I like when doing adages. What I didn't like about them was the satin on the tips came off within a week and when I walked normal in them, they were clunky. Overall, I love my Gaynor Mindens and I am planning to use them forever. Also, the shanks run pretty soft, so if you have bendy feet get the hard shank!
05/22/06 by Leah from Irvine, CA Worth a proper fitting
Rating: 5 I've been wearing one pair of Gaynor Minden's for almost 8 months and they are wonderful shoes to wear. If they are fitted well, they feel like your old paste shoes at their best moment, when they're flexible enough to allow your arch to show off, but still with enough support. However, most the complaints I've seen here (except some subjective opinions on aesthetic quality) mostly have to do with the fit of the shoe. Discount Dance tells you: go get a proper fitting first and maybe even go to a few stores, before you blindly buy a pair from this catalog. There are softer shanks, harder shanks, narrower and wider widths, it's worthwhile to feel like you like it. Also, check out Gaynor Minden's webpage, www.dancer.com , for their fitting guide, which explains the possible combinations as well. The shoes are comfortable and sleek looking, no string pressing into your arch, and from various dance studies, they are much better for your feet! Why wear shoes that can destroy your feet (on the path to making them stronger) when you can take care of them and do everything you want to on pointe with a healthier alignment to boot?
05/17/06 by Chantal from Trinidad & Tobago Rating: 5 I have been dancing for a loooong time and I just bought my first pair of Gaynor Minden pointe shoes. I was determined to find a shoe that would make my feet look good. That was all I wanted at this stage, after having tried every possible shoe. A friend of mine had been preaching about Gaynor Minden for some time now. I can't say what took me so long to take her advice and buy a pair. I eventually did and now there is no other shoe for me. Just putting your feet into the shoe is enough to justify buying it. I have never worn such a more cushioned & comfortable shoe. No toe pads required. Also I realize that I was sickling my feet in my old pointe shoes and GM forced me to correct my stance on pointe . My feet look great too. I am never going back to another shoe.
05/13/06 by Balletstar from Fredericksburg, VA Amazing!!!!
Rating: 5 I used to break in shoes in 2 practices. My Gaynors have lasted me almost a year!!! They are so much more comfortable than the paste shoes also. I could never go back to my old shoes. These shoes may be more expensive, but they are definitely worth it.
05/08/06 by Ali Rating: 3 I wore one pair of GMs. I think that they were fitted too small, which actually displaced the shank, and bunched up the inside fabric. I don't have banana feet, so since these shoes are very soft, they made me knuckle slightly all the time. Definitely get these fitted professionally, where they have a lot of combinations in stock.
05/08/06 by Danidancer28 from Wausau, WI Amazing!
Rating: 5 I absolutely love these shoes! They are the best thing a dancer could ever hope for!!! They are so comfortable and easy to work with. I would recommend these to any newcomer on pointe. They feel one with your feet, not at all boxy and odd. Basically they are just great to work with and are super comfortable.
05/02/06 by N.S from California Rating: 4 Contrary to what others may say, I believe that this is a great shoe for beginners. I started with these for about 5 years and I can wear just about any shoe I want. I've worn Grishkos, Blochs, and now I wear Freeds. The problem with these shoes though, are that if you have a wide foot like mine, you need a 4 box and they do not taper the toe, so it looks ugly and blocky. Overall, good shoe for beginners.
05/02/06 by Anonymous Comfort Alas. Not for beginners.
Rating: 4 These shoes make you feel soooooo comfortable on pointe. I always used a hard shank Elite Grishko, until I bought these. After 3 years on pointe, this shoe is a treat. Unfortunately, for beginners whose feet are not yet strong, these pointe shoes will not give you the support you need. I started with Grishkos, that's the shoe for beginners.
05/01/06 by Addie from S.B., California Great
Rating: 5 I am a beginner and I love these shoes. I understand that they don't help strengthen your feet but they are the only shoes that I can get all the way over my pointe with. I am only however, allowed one more pair!! But they last very long and are very comfortable!
05/01/06 by Aria from Mountain View, CA Pretty, but lack support
Rating: 3 These shoes are gorgeous to look at, make the foot look wonderful, and are very soft and comfy inside, but they simply lack support. I need to feel my foot pressing onto the shank, feel the slight resistance. If you do not feel the same need as I do, then these shoes would be superb. However, I am giving it a review based for myself. My preferred shoes are still Capezio Pavlowas.
04/26/06 by Snowflake QUEEN from Parma, Ohio Most comfortable shoe I've ever felt!
Rating: 5 I like how Gaynor Minden shoes move with your feet and how their style is. The only problem I have with them is I can't get to my full pointe after breaking them in for a month. My old pointe shoes broke in after a week for me.
Snowflake
04/20/06 by Hayley Fields Dance Company Something completely different
Rating: 4 While very comfortable, they take some getting used to, after spending the past 20 years in paste shoes. The platform is enormous (twice the size of my paste shoes), despite the tapered box. Still easy to turn in, though I don't feel as much support for a full 32 fouette sequence, as I do in my beloved Grishkos. I would NEVER suggest these for beginners, as they provide just enough support for feet which are strong enough to hold their own on pointe anyway and no more. But for experienced dancers, they can be a comfortable treat for the feet after a long season in hard paste shoes.
04/20/06 by Hannah Great, comfy, lasts a loooong time
Rating: 5 For me, these are fabulous. Because of my flat-footed bone structure, I have always had trouble getting all the way over on pointe, even though I have been on pointe for 4 1/2 years and have strong ankles and feet. I have tried several different brands, and these are the only shoes that allow me to get all the way over. The balance on and off pointe is absolutely amazing. They are very comfortable, and you don't need as much padding, which is also really nice. A great shoe.. However, I have to agree with everybody else who is saying that these are not for the beginner, as they do not build strength nearly as well as traditional paste shoes. Also, I have been told by several friends of mine who also have tried this shoe, dancers with high arches may "overflow" the box.
Also, they do have a gapping problem on demi pointe, but I was able to fix this by adding extra elastic. Overall, this shoe can be good or bad, depending on what type of foot you have. These do not fit the same way as traditional pointe shoes. I would recommend having a professional fitting done before you order these shoes online!
04/17/06 by Anonymous Rating: 5 They last!!! and can handle a tough dancing schedule. I love the soft padded heels and the shoe is flat under the ball of the foot, so there's no wobble! They are very comfortable and really reduce pain dramatically!
04/13/06 by Balletcath from Tucson, AZ Rating: 4 I have worn them for several years now and have a high arch, wide metatarsal w/bunions & tapered toes. They are so comfortable, supportive, and yet I don't fight them to let my foot do the work. However, my beautiful foot does not have the same gorgeous shape as in traditional pointe shoes. They have enabled me to progress to multiple turns and great balances. These are NOT FOR THE BEGINNER, as you must have an understanding of how to pull up and work your foot or these shoes will do it for you. Over all a good shoe, with each pair exactly the same. No worries about different makers, or a shoe that just doesn't quite feel right from pair to pair. And they last much longer for the very flexible foot. Instead of 4 classes in a pair of shoes, I now wear them for 15-20 classes per pair. The balance point is very far forward, which is great for the highly arched foot. Plus, you can get rid of a lot of that padding inside your shoe and really get closer to the floor. Great for balancing on flat as well as pointe. MUST fit correctly. Professional fitting recommended before online order, but these shoes will save you money if you have "expensive" feet.
04/12/06 by returning dancer Rating: 3 (re: #3 box & suppleflex shank) Very comfortable! I was amazed at how painless doing hops on pointe was in these shoes. The box is great for those with very wide metatarsals but tapered toes. The shank is highly responsive yet supportive for those with strong feet. It gaps horribly on demi-pointe (even in the N width with tightened drawstring), and creates an odd line overall. I have a very high arch, but it doesn't look as good in these shoes. I caution against using them for beginners, as it would NOT help to build up strength with the sup shank. The box is also so light and flexible that it inhibits building strength. I did not, however, feel "propped up" or that the shoe did the work for me as others have claimed, though I do agree that it can make pointe "too easy" for new students (which will only harm them in the long run).
04/06/06 by Anonymous They are wonderful!
Rating: 5 I've tried several brands of pointe shoes and these are by far the best! They are very comfortable and durable. I'm glad I didn't use them my first year of pointe, though. I believe my feet would have gotten lazy.
04/06/06 by Angie Worth every penny.
Rating: 5 After using other brands of shoes for over 12 years and earning an awful lot of blisters in the process, I think GM’s are the best out there. They only “prop” you up if you get a shank that is too hard for your particular needs. If you get the right shank then you have a shoe that will be consistent and last at least 5 times longer than any other cardboard/paste pointe shoe out there. And trust me-I’ve tried them ALL! Regular paste shoes are constantly changing: with the weather and with your body's demands on them. I can go through 5 pairs of Freeds in a week(expensive!!) whereas one pair of GM’s will last me 2 or 3 months and that’s with taking class almost every day!
04/01/06 by Anonymous Not for beginners, unfortunately.
Rating: 3 This is by far the most comfortable, easy-to-love shoe. Unfortunately, it "props" your feet, letting them be lazy. Sure, you will love these shoes, but they are not for students looking to create strong feet. 5 stars for comfort, 1 for strengthening and foot development.
03/31/06 by Anonymous Rating: 5 After dancing with a different brand, I think Gaynor Minden is A LOT better! I couldn't dance or even get up on my toes with my other shoes. But I am dancing MUCH better since I have switched my shoes!
03/31/06 by Anonymous from Illinois Rating: 5 Wonderfully comfortable, quiet, flattering and long lasting. Since it's "broken in" from day 1, I can always be dancing at my best.
03/27/06 by Anonymous Rating: 5 It is fabulous! The best I have ever worn. Very comfrotable for a point shoe :)
